Moelven Wood is the biggest supplier of timber products to the Byggmakker system. Moelven’s strength lies in its range of products. They have most things and we buy all categories of building and interior products - white, impregnated, battens, floors, interior panels. But as far as Byggmakker in Norway is concerned, construction timber and exterior panels is where they are strongest.
COOPERATION IS STRENGTH
Purchasing is done by each individual Byggmakker company so that they can control it themselves. Centrally in Byggmakker, we handle administration, invoicing and marketing. As a chain we have certain central requirements for distribution but requirements can also be adapted locally. That’s where the strength lies - cooperation between Moelven and each individual store - to get the most efficient deliveries. It is up to each individual Byggmakker locally to make use of what gives price and delivery benefits for both parties.
TRANSPORT COSTS AND PRICE MOST IMPORTANT
Most of the outlets in the chain receive deliveries directly from Moelven, apart from in the far north where the distances are too great. The most important deciding factors for us are transport costs and price. Volume goods like construction timber are cheap products that are expensive to transport a long way and in north Norway especially we have a number of Swedish suppliers.
VEHICLES MUST BE FULLY LOADED
The basic requirement is that vehicles - with or without trailers - must be fully loaded when they leave Moelven’s plants. A half full vehicle obviously costs as much as a full one, and naturally we must also think of the environment. It is good if you can avoid transporting products further than necessary. We have stores of different sizes that can coordinate purchasing and deliveries together with Moelven and if possible the same vehicle can deliver to several destinations within a sensible radius. We manage to fill the vehicles to our stores from Tr¿ndelag southwards. Further north, the goods go by boat and we also work with other suppliers.
USED TO LONGER LEAD TIMES
Once you get outside the central areas of east Norway and distances become greater, then lead times can get a bit longer as well. But that is something the store and Moelven cooperate on and are familiar with and Moelven manages to distribute in line with our agreements. Because of its flexible distribution system, Moelven is also strong in west Norway.
